Smoke Control Areas

Introduced to deal with the smogs of the 1950s and 1960s, the
Clean Air Acts gave local authorities powers to control emissions
of smoke, dust and fumes.
As a result, smoke control areas were established in many large
towns and cities in the UK.
Smoke Control Areas still effect many UK residents today. If you
live in a Smoke Control Area and want to have a solid fuel stove,
you will need to ensure it is approved for use in Smoke Control
Areas.
Designated areas
If you do not know whether you live in a smoke control area then
you can check with your local council or visit www.uksmokecontrolareas.co.uk.
Exempt fuels and stoves
You can purchase any Yeoman multi fuel stove for installation in
a Smoke Control Area but may burn only authorised smokeless fuels.
A list of these fuels can be found by visiting: www.uksmokecontrolareas.co.uk.
Burning logs
Logs may only be burnt on stoves or cassette fires that have
been granted exemption from the regulations by the government
through DEFRA.
